Nikki, Greg and Jan Nikki and Jan Nikki cooking The winning tortilla soup

Simply Home Sponsored a local soup team competition and they are winners! - Feb. 2010

Adults and students faced off in the fifth-annual soup cook-off Monday night at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center.
The contest drew hundreds of people to sample soups that ranged from bisques to hearty bean stews to meaty chili prepared by amateurs and professionals, students and adults.
Nikki Wilson, a freshman at the College of Southern Maryland and former Forrest center culinary student, paired with her mother, Jan Jarboe, to make a Southwestern chicken tortilla soup. "We've played with this recipe over the years," Jarboe said. The recipe won Monday in the poultry category for the senior, or adult, division.
The pair has participated in the cook-off every year since it started. It's a fun mother-daughter activity, Jarboe said, and lets them recreate some of the cooking adventures they have at home together.
Although they have a recipe written down, it did not even make it out of Jarboe's bag during the cooking, which involved adding a host of herbs and frying strips cut from soft tortilla shells to create a full flavor and body.
"We throw it in and it's always going to taste good," Wilson said.
